The long term impact of any health care intervention – or lack thereof – is greatest during childhood and adolescence. The provision of quality health care is increasingly costly. APC’s annual budget approaches $2 million with only a portion funded by reimbursements. The remainder of the budget must be covered by contributions. The cost is great, but the outcomes are far greater.
In 2010, APC enrolled 613 new children and provided 12,098 clinical visits to 2,511 unduplicated children. Of these visits, 560 were mental health counseling sessions for individual children and parents coping with developmental, psychosocial and behavioral problems. APC administered 6,818 vaccines to immunize against preventable childhood diseases and filled or obtained 465 free prescriptions for uninsured children. More than 300 children with special health care needs (e.g. cerebral palsy, developmental delay, Down Syndrome) received extensive care coordination. In addition, APC promotes literacy through the Reach Out and Read program by offering each child a free book after each visit.
